You are writing for a massive audience. People from all walks of life are browsing the Internet and you have to adres them all. Quite a tall order.
Firstly it is important that you know what segment of the market you are trying to address. It does not help a lot if you write in a language fit for a child when you want to reach adults with degrees. Well sometimes it helps to speak to them in this language …
As a general rule you should not write in a language that nobody but a select few understands (Unless, of course, the select few are the ones you are trying to reach).
You may use terminology that most people do not understand – provided you explain it in a language understandable to all. This way people will see you know your subject.
It is critical that people reading your test will understand what you are writing.
